01 CHARCOAL MEDIUM INTRODUCTION
Understanding the properties of charcoal: Students will learn about the different forms of charcoal, such as compressed charcoal for darker, more intense lines, and vine or willow charcoal for lighter, more erasable marks. The course will cover how these properties can be used to achieve various artistic effects.
Tools and materials: The course will introduce students to the essential tools for charcoal painting, includ- ing various types of paper (e.g., textured, smooth), blending tools (e.g., paper stumps, brushes), and erasers (e.g., kneaded, rubber). Students will learn how to select the right materials for their projects.
Safety and cleanup: Charcoal can be messy, so the course will provide tips for working cleanly and safely, including how to prevent smudging, pro- tect your work, and clean your workspace | and tools.
02 BASIC LIGHT AND SHADOW
Study of light sources and their impact on subjects: Students will learn how to observe and ana- lyze different light sources and their effects on subjects, including how light direction, intensity, and color can influence the mood and realism of a charcoal painting. Types of light and shadow: The course will & delve into the concepts of direct light, indi- rect light, cast shadows, form shadows, and reflected light, teaching students how to use these elements to create a sense of depth and volume in their work.
Techniques for rendering light and shadow: Students will practice using charcoal to depict light and shadow effectively, learn- ing techniques for creating soft gradients, sharp contrasts, and realistic textures.
03 VALUE STUDY
Learning the value scale in charcoal: Students will explore the grayscale, from dark to light, and learn how to use different pressures and charcoal types to create a range of values in their artwork.
Exercises in transitioning values: The course will include exercises to help students practice creating smooth transitions between light and dark values, an essential skill for creating three-dimensional effects in their paintings.
Creating dynamic contrasts: Students will learn to use the full spectrum of values to create dynamic contrasts, enhancing the drama and impact of their charcoal paintings.
04 SHADING TECHNIQUES

06 REALISTIC WORK
Achieving realism with charcoal: Students will learn to create highly detailed and realistic charcoal paintings, focusing on accurate representation of subjects, including textures, proportions, and fine details.
Advanced techniques for realism: The course will cover advanced techniques such as layering charcoal for depth, using erasers for highlights, and blending for smooth transitions, all aimed at enhancing the realism of the artwork.
07 IMPRESSIONS WORK IN WILLOW CHARCOAL
Exploring impressionism with charcoal: Students will learn how to use willow char- coal, known for its softness and erasability, to create impressionistic works that capture the essence and mood of a scene or subject rather than detailed realism.
